Mattancherry Palace

The Palace was built by the Portuguese and gifted to the Royal family of Kochi as a gesture of goodwill. This transfer was mainly to ensure their exclusive trade privileges. It gave the Europeans the power to govern the natives for a very long time.

During the Dutch rule, they renovated the place and called it The Dutch Palace. It is still known by this name. The palace shares its boundaries with a temple and the synagogue. The backwaters are located to its east. It now functions as a museum of history of the Kochi Royal Family. You can find chariots, palanquins, copy of treaties, declarations and royal clothes and accessories on display. The murals portray scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on Saturdays.
