The Portuguese built this church in 1558. It was destroyed by the British during the Anglican period of rule in Kochi. Bishop Dom Gomez Ferreira commissioned a new church later. It was proclaimed as a Basilica by His holiness Pope John Paul in 1984. The neo-classical architecture of the Basalica is its most attractive element. Its pastel-coloured interiors and carved wooden pulpit are notable.
