St Francis Church - Fort Cochin
This church has seen the rise and fall of three empires. St Francis Church is the oldest European-built Christian place of worship in India. Vasco da Gama’s remains were once housed in this church. His earthly remains were taken to Portugal but his tomb is still present here.
The church was originally built by Portuguese Franciscans in 1503 with wood, but in 1779, the Dutch rebuilt it in stone and converted it into a protestant church. After the Anglo-Dutch treaty, when Kochi came under the control of the British it was restructured once more – and now as an Anglican church!
The tomb of Vasco da Gama and the clock tower attracts a lot of visitors. The clock tower was built in memory of Hal Harson, the managing director of Aspinwall, a British tea trading company in Kochi.
