Synagogue Mattanchery
Located in the maze of streets in Jew Town in Mattanchery, this place of fabulous craftsmanship was built in 1568. The Jews had a relationship with Kerala even before the Europeans came into the picture. Inside, you can find artifacts from the 10th century A.D. There’s a copper plate granted by Bhaskara Ravi Varma, the then ruler of Kochi. The Portuguese destroyed it in 1662. Its restoration was completed by 1671.
There’s a curious clock tower near the Synagogue with four clock faces, and they are in four different languages - Malayalam, Hebrew, Roman and Arabic.
The floor of the Synagogue is decorated with blue and white tiles brought from Canton. No two tiles are said to be similar in design! You can see beautiful chandeliers, wooden furniture and a metal pulpit. The scrolls of the ‘Torah’ can be seen here.
A lot of Jews migrated to Israel from their settlements in Kerala in the last couple of decades. Those members of the Jewish community that are still here live besides the synagogue. Marriages of Jews from all over Kerala and even from far away Bombay take place in this synagogue.
